1. Use Technology to Keep You on Track

Technology is often viewed as a major distractor, but you can also use it to help keep you on track as you study. There are apps that you can use to temporarily block distracting websites for a period of time. 

You can also use a “Tomato Timer” app that encourages you to study in bursts with small breaks in between. Finally, check out white or pink noise apps that play sounds to help drown out distracting noises.

2. Create a Detailed Study Plan

Before each study session, take a few minutes to jot down a plan. This should include everything you want to accomplish. So instead of setting a goal to “study the Civil War,” you might write:

  • Memorize the names of the five most important battles of the civil war
  • Learn the dates of each battle
  • Be able to describe the events before and after each battle

By giving yourself some very specific things to accomplish, you may stay on task better. Also, when you are done studying, you’ll know exactly what you achieved.

3. Clear Your Desk

How to prepare your mind for studying is also about the things around you. Extra items on your desk can lead to two problems. First, they become a source of distraction. You may end up absentmindedly fidgeting with these items or rearranging them.

4. Set an End Time for Each Study Session

Maybe you’re distracted because you aren’t experiencing any sense of urgency. If you feel you can study for as long as you want, getting distracted is no big deal. You simply study longer.

The only problem is that long study sessions aren’t very effective. It’s better to study for shorter periods of time with more intense focus. To combat this, set a time limit for each study session. This will help you to stay on track.

5. Write Down Your Motivators

Write down a few notes to remind yourself of why you are studying and a checklist on how to prepare your mind for studying somewhere pinned around your desk. Go ahead and include both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. For example, you might write that you want to instill better habits and that you want to earn a good grade on an upcoming exam.
